Affect Studies

“IN AFFECT STUDIES, EVERY EMOTION TELLS A STORY, AND EVERY STORY SHAPES OUR WORLD”

Before I dig deeper in Affect Studies, let me introduce myself, Hi! I am Floricarl Bulado and am taking up a Bachelor of arts in Literature in Cebu Normal University. In the intricate tapestry of educational experiences, emotions play a pivotal role in shaping not only individual learning journeys but also the overall educational landscape.
Welcome to my exploration of "Affect Studies," a project born out of the curiosity to unravel the emotional nuances that color the academic experience. As I delve into this captivating realm, I aim to shed light on the profound impact of emotions on learning outcomes, classroom dynamics, and the overall well-being of students and educators alike. Join me on this journey as I navigate the intersections of emotions and education, seeking to uncover insights that contribute to a more holistic understanding of the educational journey.
Affect studies also known as affect theory it is an interdisciplinary field of study that investigates into the complicated and multifaceted nature of human emotions, feelings, and affects. Affect studies draw from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, philosophy, and cultural studies. Affect studies often challenge the mind-body dualism that separates cognitive and emotional processes. They emphasize the embodied nature of emotions, emphasizing that emotions are not exclusively products of the mind but are deeply interconnected with bodily sensations, gestures, and expressions.

Example:
“EMOTIONAL LABOR IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY”

There is also SUB-CLASSES OF AFFECT STUDIES: Fielding Affect, Prefixes and politics, Virtuality and individuation, Psychoanalytic affect, Ordinaries and atmospheres, Human, Non-human, Immaterial and Incorporeal, Bodies, Ugly, minor and revolutionary feelings, Animacies and Affectabilities, Geographies, Infrastructures, and Architectures, Pedagogies, Rhetorics, and Literacies.

In Fielding affect, Affect studies resist canonicity. This resistance to canonicity is based on the belief that affect studies are inherently diverse, continually evolving, and open to a wide range of perspectives and voices. Schaefer (2015) deftly sketches a minimalist genealogy of affect. In this context, genealogy refers to the tracing of the historical roots or origins of a particular idea or concept and the term minimalist suggests that the author has presented this historical descent in a brief and straightforward manner. He also suggests that to study affect is to explore the non sovereign and the nonhuman.
In Prefixes and Politics, affect studies refers to the examination of how various prefixes attached to words can influence or shape political discourse and emotional responses. In the absence of any singular discipline-straddling method of affect. Seigworth (2017) offers an introduction to critiques and cross-disciplinary tensions related to anxieties around the conceptualization of affect as asignifying, prepersonal, precognitive, nonlinguistic, nonrepresentational, or non human with prefixes like “pre” or “non” often misread as disqualifying rather than signaling an opening-up of theoretical focus. However, the text argues that these prefixes are not meant to exclude affect from study but rather to open up new theoretical perspectives and focus on aspects of affect that go beyond conventional linguistic or representational boundaries.
In affect studies, virtuality refers to the realm of potential or possible emotional experiences and expressions that exist in a digital environment. It encompasses the ways in which technology, media, and virtual spaces can influence and shape emotions. In affect studies, Individuation refers to the process through which individuals develop a unique and distinct emotional identity or emotional self. Understanding individuation is important for comprehending how emotions are experienced and expressed differently by various individuals, and how these differences can influence their interactions, relationships, and overall well-being.
In affect studies, psychoanalytic affect refers to the exploration of emotions and affective experiences within the framework of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is a psychological theory and therapeutic approach developed by Sigmund Freud and expanded upon by subsequent psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic affect studies often involve examining how unconscious processes, early childhood experiences, defense mechanisms, and the dynamics of the id, ego, and superego influence emotions and affective responses in individuals.
In affect studies Ordinaries refers to the everyday common and it focuses on the routine emotional experiences that people encounter in their daily lives. While Atmosphere used to describe the emotional or affective vibe of a particular place, environment, or situation.
In Affect studies there are also human, nonhuman, immaterial and incorporeal bodies. Where in Human bodies refer to the physical, biological bodies of human beings. Nonhuman bodies encompass all other forms of embodiment that are not specifically human. This includes animals, plants, machines, or even abstract entities. Immaterial bodies, these are conceptualized bodies that lack a physical presence. They exist in the realm of ideas, information, or digital representation. Incorporeal bodies, these are typically non-physical and lack a tangible presence. These are often considered in philosophical and metaphysical discussions.
In Affect Studies, ugly feelings is a term coined by cultural critic and scholar Sianne Ngai. It refers to a category of emotions that are often considered negative, unattractive, or uncomfortable. In minor feeling, poet and author Cathy Park Hong, introduced the term “minor feelings” in her work entitled “Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning.” It describes the complex, often overlooked emotions experienced by Asian Americans, such as ambivalence, dissonance, or invisibility. Revolutionary Feelings, these are emotions experienced by individuals and communities engaged in social or political movements aimed at bringing about change and justice.
In Affect Studies, Animacies is a term introduced by cultural theorist Mel Y. Chen. It refers to the social and cultural hierarchies or biases that attribute different levels of agency, aliveness, or humanity to various entities. The concept of animacies invites scholars to examine how social and cultural norms shape our emotional responses to various entities. Affectabilities is a concept used to explore the capacity of objects, spaces, or situations to provoke or elicit emotional responses in individuals. Researchers examine how different factors and qualities contribute to shaping our emotional responses to the world around us. Both, Animacies and Affectabilities contribute to an elegant understanding of how emotions and affective experiences are influenced by social, cultural, and environmental factors. They encourage researchers to consider the dynamics of what or who is considered to have agency and how various entities have the potential to elicit emotional responses in individuals.
In Affect studies, Geographies, Infrastructures, and Architectures in affect studies emphasize the ways in which the physical and socio-cultural environments in which individuals live shape and influence their emotional experiences. These concepts help researchers better understand the interplay between space, structures, systems, and emotions, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of how emotions are influenced by the physical and cultural contexts in which they occur.
In affect studies, "Pedagogies," "Rhetorics" and "Literacies" are concepts that contribute to the examination of how emotions, feelings, and affective experiences are embedded in educational, communicative, and interpretive processes. Each concept highlights a different aspect of how emotions intersect with learning, communication, and interpretation.

ALL OF THESE SUBCLASSES AND AREAS OF FOCUS WITHIN AFFECT STUDIES PROVIDE A MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND COMPLEX APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING THE COMPLEX INTERPLAY BETWEEN EMOTIONS, CULTURE, BIOLOGY, SOCIETY, AND VARIOUS ASPECTS OF HUMAN LIFE.
