Nova Beldad

Nova Beldad was born in a humble town in Northern Mindanao. At this moment of writing, she's taking up a bachelor of arts in literature. With nothing but dreams as her sword and words as her shield, she aspire to conquer the world with enough panache, and perhaps, in tough times, with a trickle of tears. She loves writing and is a bit of a political junkie. For her, literature is an essential vessel to amplify the voices of the masses.

Facts about me: I do love doing many things; apparently interested in anything that seems cute and beautiful. I like dancing, singing, cooking, crafting, and playing mobile games. I also love sports: taekwondo, basketball, badminton, and volleyball. I love nature and it's my favorite muse. I spend most of my time sleeping or running outdoors with my pet dogs. Another hint is that I seldom thought of murder and twisted events or scenarios, yet I'm scared of watching brutal and heart-stopping motion pictures. I am a hopeless romantic chic. Never liked men who aren't written by women. My eyes are brutally honest.

Love language/s: Gift-giving, words of affirmation, and quality time.

I Love You Since 1892

I love you Since 1892 by Mia Alfonso

Book Analysis: A Reader Response by Florineth Rodrigo

I Love You Since 1892,  It is a historical fiction and romantic novel of a Filipina author named Undeniably Gorgeous or also known as Binibining Mia. The story was written in pure Filipino language which every Filipino could understand. The story was about the tragic love story of the two main characters named Juanito Alfonso, Carmela Isabella and Carmelita Montercarlos. Where it takes us back in time where everything is beautiful and tragic like what we picture out during the Spanish colonization in the Philippines.

The story focuses on the character of Carmela Isabella who is a nursing student of Santo Tomas University in the year of 2016. All the mysterious things happened in her life when saw a portrait of someone in their ancestors house who looked like her. The enigmatic feeling leads to someone  who changes her life when she meets a nun named Olivia who gives hope to someone else's life and the character of  Carmela turns into someone else who will die , with the same feature but with a bit of a familiar and different name. Everything changes, from the time and place, also when Carmela meets Juanito Alfonso and to accomplish the mission for her to be back where she is from. From the circumstances to daily meetups they both feel the love of each other. Until there is a hurricane in their life to crash out when Carmelita's personality takes over the life of her own. Juanito finds out that Carmela is not the real Carmelita Montercarlos but the grand-grand niece of her sister's daughter. Carmelita dies because she killed herself during her wedding day with Juanito Alfonso but she doesn't want her wife. She regrets and wants to live again and she meets mother Olivia who gives her a second chance to live the life bought by someone else till the day she turns 18. Carmela will forever not exist from past to present but Carmela found out the reasons why she left in the past because of the selfishness of Carmelita. Until she knows the way to go back where she is from, Juanito Alfonso should not die but to sacrifice himself for Carmela to be back on time where she is from.

The novel historical fiction and events in time brought about the culture during the Spanish colonization and lesson about patience when it comes to love. Juanito waited for Carmela Isabella until she was born but he died the year after Carmela was born. Mother Olivia serves as hope to the second life of Carmelita.

The author showcases in the Novel the beauty of Filipino Literature and culture. The imagination of the author and how to emphasize the aesthetic of the Filipino language that  can reflect its own culture. The author also gives a lesson that every tragedy has a beautiful ending. No matter how our hearts crash into pieces of unending love story but with the memory with someone it will remain unforgettable.

The atmosphere of the story is a lot of trailing that we are on the character spot. The author really hit me to the bone from every chapter of the book. It has everything from the family to the country. The book has a genre of  history that can take us back in time, even if it is weird and cliche for some it really gives a lesson for every Filipino in this generation. Ever since I read this book, I have appreciated the culture of Filipino literature. It made me become who I am. It taught me a lot of lessons from someone who doesn't like  to be a Filipino to someone who cherishes and is a proud Filipino.

Untitled

A Structuralist Review on Cyril Wong's Untitled

written by Kiem C. Dela Peña

If there is one notion that unites every form of love from every point of origin, it would be the yearning for it to be seen and accepted. Untitled by Cyril Wong is a Singaporean confessional piece from his book, Oneiros in 2010. Within the context of a conservative Singapore, it narrates the love between two men and their search for a world that accepts them.

The heart knows what it wants. Its fervent rhythm does not stop for approval. Just as Shakespearean’s forbidden romance, it perseveres and searches for a sanctuary where it can be free and unhindered. Cyril Wong's Untitled, ventures on personal aches of love and alienation. In a world where passion and romance are celebrated, there is a corner of isolation in a kind of romance that is seen with estrangement. As a thematic literary piece, it weaves a narrative with symbolic representation in its threads. It exhibits signs that foreground the experience imbued within the lines.

Untitled expands on love that is met with opposition. Outside the warmth that envelops the two hearts is a cold aversion from their family and society.

Behind you,

I see my parents on the sidewalk

fainting comically to the ground

at the sight of us, a wrist to the brow.

Cyril Wong's poetry hints at aspects of struggles with conservative religiosity (Wong, 2015).

More people seem to

drop as we drive by: Father Arro

who told me God existed by virtue

of trees and the sun's rise and fall,

every teacher who favoured us

for busting our asses to please them,

the rest of your family who have

yet to learn about us.

The people collapsing at the sight of their love conveys disapproval and opposition. And the secrecy of their relationship hints at their reluctance and fear to make it known. Estrangement, opposition, and disapproval are the visions that are recurring within the narrative.

They collapse

in spite of themselves. Buildings

are starting to sway too as we pass.

Soon the Parliament House is

caving unto itself. I watch

the Merlion wobble and topple

into the river with an unimpressive

splash. Churches, flats, and malls

shudder to rubble in our wake.

Within the lines, pervading are also the hearts resisting their fate. The optimism and hopeful enchantment for a future anew, stripped from its prejudiced eyes.

Somehow we are still kissing,

you with your eyes closed, mine

wide open, as our ride takes us

to a shore and straight into the sea.

We stop when we reach a world

where no person or building may

fall at the spectacle of our embrace.

I think we are almost there.

Passion is the kind that brings out the best in us. It leads us into a world unknown and unearths parts of ourselves that astonish us. Our passions are what makes us human and to love without ends is the most human thing we can do. Untitled by Cyril Wong reverberates the desire to love ardently and freely, to embrace with no fear, and to love in a world that does not crumble at our hearts.

Maritime Studies

“IN EVERY TRADE, WE CAN BE A ONE CULTURE”

BY: FLORINETH RODRIGO

Hi! My name is Florineth, and please let me allow you to share my expedition about “ Maritime Studies” and Welcome aboard! But before that let me share some brief information about the study. It is about the economy in transporting a product. Essentially, it’s the study of anything related to the sea, ships, and the industries and activities connected to maritime trade and transportation.

In globalization, maritimes plays an important role nationwide, and the role to serve and to deliver the needs and wants of people in every country.

What is Maritime Studies?

According to wikipedia, Maritime studies is an interdisciplinary academic field that uses liberal art business as the foundation for exploring humankind’s relationship with waterways and water shades. So it addresses the art of navigation or the skill of managing and maneuvering and it represents a link between the activities associated with the use of the sea in the pursuit of economic interest or the exploration of resources.

So there are two important aspects in maritime: Navigation and Marine Engineering.

  1. Navigation concerns the ship management, safety, and construction. This means that it is both the science, the skill, and the art of providing solutions to two core problems: on how to at any time and at any place fix the geographical position and the course of a vessel.

It is  the head of the ship, the one to lead the route in navigating from one country to another. Navigating a ship involves ensuring the vessel reaches its destination safely and efficiently, it also coordinates with captain, crew, and other ships to maintain safe passage and handle any navigational challenges that arise during the voyage.

  1. Marine Engineering is concerned with a variety of different ship’s main engine, auxiliary engine and all other systems that are needed for safe and reliable navigation at sea. They maintain and operate the whole ship, like the mechanical, electrical and electronic systems related to ship propulsion and auxiliary systems.

If the Navigation is the one to control the head, the Marine Engineering is the whole body of the ship. They are the one to maintain the overall system or the physical structure of the ship.

In maritime studies, the Maritime industry encompasses a broader spectrum. It includes not only shipbuilding, maritime law, port operation, naval activities and marine engineering. The role of the maritime industry involves understanding the economic, commercial and operational aspects of these sectors, including trade routes, vessel operation. In the industry of Maritime it has a big contribution nationwide because all of the trading was shipped by sea. It forms the country's growth and development.

Marine Transportation

Marine transportation refers to the movement of goods, people, or materials by water. It also known as “ocean transport or waterborne transport ” encompasses various vessels like ships, boats, and barges that travel across oceans, seas, rivers, or other waterways for trade, transportation, leisure, or military purposes of international trade and the global economy.

It's a crucial aspect of global trade, facilitating the movement of goods between continents and countries. Over 80% of the volume international trade in goods is carried by the sea, and the percentage is even higher for the developing countries in the world.

Maritime Trade Operation

A contemporary capability specifically designed to engage with maritime industry, coordinate operations involving maritime commercial interests and protect merchant shipping. It facilitates the transportation of goods and commodities across waterways globally. The purpose is to efficiently move goods, fostering international commerce, economic growth, and exchange between nations by utilizing ships to transport various products.

Why is Maritime an Important Industry?

The Maritime Industry is important because it has a big contribution around the world and it plays a vital role in economic development in many countries, particularly those with a strong export based economy. The Maritime Industry has a significant impact because of the waterways that globally the world has. But, the extent and scale of maritime activities may vary depending on a country's geographical location, resources, and economic priorities, but the maritime industry is a worldwide network supporting trade, transportation, and various other sectors across the globe.

Moreover, it is also a leading source of employment in many countries especially the county that has ports and a lengthy coastline. Also, many Filipinos are seafarers who work abroad like marine Engineering, navigators and those who work on cruise ships because it has the highest rate of employment opportunities and according to the International Trade Operation (IMO) there are more than 1.8 million seafarers both officer and ratings employed globally.

On maritime there are various kinds and it has differences between what ia Maritime,  Shipping, Freight , Logistic and Apply

  1. Maritime it has anything related to the ships, sea, navigating of ships from point A to point B, seafarers, ship owning and other related activities that can interact with the sea.

  2. Shipping is the act of carriage in a cargo from point A to point B using the ship which falls under the maritime. It transports goods or passengers by sea, it is a crucial aspect of global trade.

  3. Logistic the process in getting the cargo from the manufacturer warehouse to the receiver’s warehouse including arranging for the shipping service by shipping line.

  4. Freight that cargo is carried using the shipping service offered by the shipping lines.

  5. Supply chain the whole grandaddy process comprising all aspects in the product cycle, from sourcing of a raw materials, production, packaging, distributing, until delivering the goods to the shelf using all of the above mentioned industries, business and services.

HISTORY OF MARITIME IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

By 100 BC, Austronesians in Island Southeast Asia were already engaging in regular maritime trade with China, South Asia, and the Middle East, introducing sailing technologies to these regions.

Balatik, a large outrigger sailboat built as a replica of the Visayan paraw. It is a typical Austronesian double outrigger vessel from Island Southeast Asia used in the most ancient maritime trade routes.

Navigation in the Indo-Pacific began with the maritime migration of the Austroneasians from Taiwan spread southwards into Island Southeast Asia and Island Melanesia during a period between 3000 and 1000 BC . The maritime connectivity within the region has been linked to it becoming a distinct cultural and economic area, when compared to the ‘mainland’ societies in the rest of Southeast Asia.

MARITIME JADE ROAD - a trade networking in Southeast Asia, which is established by the links between the indigenous people in southeast asia.

How does Maritime  Studies relate to culture?

Maritime connection to the cultural theory often revolve around the concept of “cultural diffusion” .This theory highlights how Maritime activities, such astrade, exploration, and migration by sea, have facilitated the spread of cultural elements—like languages, beliefs, customs, and technologies —between different societies and regions. The sea has served as a medium for exchanges, syncretism, and the creation of hybrid culture influenced by interactions with diverse Maritime communities.

Northanger Abbey: Through the Lens of a Contemporary Woman

An Analysis from a Feminist Perspective by Emmy Julve.

"You're a bit weird, aren't you?"

Odd, peculiar, and witty, Catherine Morland symbolizes a woman who rejects the conventional norms of her time. Born from the pages of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, this novel serves as both a coming-of-age story and a satirical take on Gothic literature. Unlike Austen's other heroines, Catherine stands out.

When I first read it, I could immediately tell that Catherine is an odd mixture of weirdness and occasional nonchalance, yet she possesses a genuine kindness, youthfulness, and sweetness that sets her apart, though this could make her appear naïve. Catherine also has a tendency to blur the lines between fiction and reality, resulting in amusing and often peculiar thoughts fueled by her overactive imagination.

Catherine's imagination, though prone to delusion, becomes the distinguishing factor that sets her apart from other characters written by Austen. This peculiar trait of hers becomes a symbol of defiance against societal norms set for women in her time period. In her era, she would be considered unconventional and likely regarded as an outcast. She does not conform to the typical expectations placed upon women. Instead of adhering to societal norms, she immerses herself in literature, choosing the world of books over prescribed societal roles for women. She does not overly concern herself with others' opinions, getting lost in her own unique world and appearing content with it. These defining characteristics solidify Catherine's uniqueness and make her a compelling symbol of defiance against societal norms.

Many argue that Northanger Abbey isn't a direct feminist novel, unlike most of Austen’s works. However, personally, it resonates as a feminist piece to me. Austen questions the literary ideal of the female archetype by portraying Catherine uniquely, challenging the norms of female conformity.

Personally, this novel resonated strongly with me, as someone who often feels out of place in society. Catherine's odd antics and wild imagination somehow found a way to my heart. Catherine also possesses the ability to form her own opinions and reject aristocratic conventions she deems wrong, and I have always been outspoken, firmly believing in being assertive and expressing oneself freely. In this aspect, Catherine and I share a likeness—both introverted and reserved, yet unapologetically opinionated.

Ever since I read this novel, I believe that Austen wrote it ahead of its time. In an era where women were constrained by societal expectations, dictating predefined roles for women, Catherine stood apart. She navigated her life with a carefree, reckless, yet liberating manner. If life were a melody, Catherine would be that off tune sticking out, very, very unapologetically herself. Centuries later, women much like Catherine would find a sense of understanding and resonance with her approach to navigating life's challenging paths—with lots and lots of imagination and perhaps a touch of nonchalance.

The Song of Achilles

"The Song of Achilles: Echoes of the Heart - A Reader-Response Exploration"

Kesshia Jake Alesna

The novel "The Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller explores the ageless themes of love, sacrifice, and destiny, evoking a profoundly personal and moving reaction from readers. The book becomes a canvas on which individual readers place their own experiences and feelings when seen through the lens of reader-response theory. Readers are encouraged to interact with the individuals as well as the larger human experiences that are linked with the story in Miller's retelling of the myth of Achilles and Patroclus. This analysis looks at how readers relate to the characters on an emotional level and how the novel's universal themes make reading it a very personal and subjective experience.

Through the narrative of "The Song of Achilles," readers inevitably get trapped in the detailed web of emotions that Miller has created. Beyond the obvious storyline, the way Achilles and Patroclus' relationship is portrayed encourages readers to consider their own relationships, friendships, and loves. The novel's examination of vulnerability, especially in Achilles' inner problems, resonates with readers who could recognize parallels in their own inner needs and difficulties. Readers may use the diverse range of feelings, from the ecstasy of love to the grief of loss, as a mirror to look at their own emotional landscapes. As people add their own viewpoints to the text and interpret the tale through their own perspectives, reader-response theory is brought to life in this way.

Readers understand "The Song of Achilles" in a profound and subjective way that goes beyond conventional analysis. Readers are given the opportunity to emotionally engage with the story through Miller's use of narrative devices, character development, and theme inquiry. The novel's capacity to stir up a range of feelings, from happiness to grief, highlights its appeal to readers of many backgrounds. Readers who actively participate in the formation of meaning through the text discover personal relevance in the adventures of the characters. By using a reader-response theory, "The Song of Achilles" transcends beyond a simple mythical recounting to a profoundly moving examination of the human condition that leaves a lasting impression on the reader's emotions and imagination.

Men Explain Things to Me

Men Explain Things to Me By Rebecca Solnit

A Modern Feminist Analysis by Carlisle Auman

IMG_256

Rebecca Solnit's collection of essays "Men Explain Things to Me" delves into the dynamics of gender inequality, with a particular emphasis on situations in which men treat women with contempt, assuming that they are ignorant of the subject matter. In the title essay, a man explains a book to Solnit, who is unaware that she is the author. Later, the term "mansplaining" was coined to describe this kind of patronizing behavior.

The essays address many issues surrounding gender roles, women's experiences, and feminism. Solnit talks about how women are culturally silenced, how gender intersects with other social factors, how language and communication carry power, and how feminist solidarity is vital. The compilation acts as both a call to action for systemic change to achieve gender equality and a critique of patriarchal structures.

Solnit challenges readers to consider the prevalent nature of gender inequality and to take an active role in tearing down oppressive structures by using personal tales, cultural analysis, and a feminist perspective. The book is a stimulating examination of the complications of gender dynamics in modern society.

The book explores the power dynamics between men and women, highlighting the unequal distribution of power in conversations, relationships, and society as a whole. Solnit contends that "mansplaining" is a symptom of a larger problem in which men, consciously or unconsciously, assert their authority and knowledge over women. The title essay introduces the concept of "mansplaining," which occurs when men, often unintentionally, assume authority and explain things to women in a patronizing manner. This behavior reflects a power dynamic in which men assert their knowledge and authority while dismissing the perspectives and contributions of women.

Solnit emphasizes the importance of systemic change in addressing gender inequality thoroughly. The book advocates for activism and involvement at all levels of society in addition to personal stories. It encourages readers to think about how they can contribute to larger movements for gender equality. This book has had a significant impact on feminist discourse, contributing to discussions around gender dynamics, feminism, and women's rights. The concept of mansplaining, in particular, has become a widely recognized and discussed phenomenon.

All things considered, "Men Explain Things to Me" is a powerful and thought-provoking book that blends feminist theory, cultural analysis, and personal narratives. It not only sheds light on specific instances of gendered interactions, but it also invites readers to consider deeper problems such as power, patriarchy, and the ongoing struggle for gender equality. The book has played an important role in shaping feminist discussions and continues to be a relevant and important contribution to the field.

The Interrelationship of Urban Development and Urban Study

penned by Nova Beldad

Urban study is the study of urban development. It uses several fields of discipline, including but not limited to anthropology, architecture, and political science. These disciplines are the ones that help researchers in deciding whether an urban development serves a place well.

The infrastructure that we see in our environment is there for a reason. They were created for our convenience. Flyovers, skywalks, and even wheelchair ramps are all results of urban planning, another significant tool of urban studies. Researchers deliberately analyze every city design to ensure that the best interest of the citizens is the top priority. However, in the Philippines, there are certain infrastructures that need to be evaluated for them to be efficient, for instance, sidewalks. Most of the sidewalks are not pedestrian-friendly. I have witnessed how passersby casually get on their knees after tripping on the narrow sidewalk. Sometimes, walkers would rather walk on the roadway due to the construction of the sidewalks.

The issue of sidewalks in the Philippines is only one of the myriads of reasons that prove the significance of urban planning for city developments. If urban planning is poor, its negative results will ripple to the citizens. Urban development has an interrelationship with urban studies. Any progress that a society must make should be assessed and checked thoroughly by researchers in the field of urban studies. If city designs are overlooked, like some sidewalks in our country, it might be detrimental to the people.

To wrap it all up, urban study is important in our society. Its significance can be traced even to the earliest developments in our communities. In other terms, urban study is a transdisciplinary field that evokes more efficient and beneficial development in our infrastructure.
